Cinema Summer Soirée

The Astra Cinema has had a bumper summer with regular Air Cadet Camps and the Children’s Summer Activities Programme boosting their viewing figures.

The early showing of Cars 2 in July saw over 300 personnel and their families pay just £4 each, raising just short of £1000 for the ‘Big Salute’ Charity. Organising a pre-release showing 2 weeks before general release was due to the sterling efforts of the Astra Committee especially WO Andy Ansell, Sgt Phil Warwick, Flt Lt Kim Bowditch and Simon Moore.

The committee decided to hold ‘The Ultimate Ladies Night’ with the showing of ‘Bridesmaids’ to raise money for the Women’s Charity, Wellbeing of Women. The audience were encouraged to bring a bottle and dress for a wedding, with a prize of a bottle of champagne and 4 tickets to the Astra cinema for the best outfit. The night was a great success, despite the odd broken glass and the words “it was not my fault, cinema cup holders are not made for wine glasses” rang out from the Cinema OIC. Three men braved the rowdy audience (which included Padre Sheila) in order to attend. The prize winner was Angela Flannigan who attended the screening in a long mint green bridesmaid dress with a white flower in her hair. The £75 raised can pay for one hour of vital research into the causes and treatments of reproductive health problems and 3 hours use of a high-powered microscope to discover the effects viruses have on cancer cells.

After the success of ‘The Ultimate Ladies Night’ the RAF Halton Astra Cinema are putting on further themed nights for Halloween and Christmas. If you would like to help out and join the Astra Cinema team as a secondary duty, there are a number of positions available. Please contact the OIC, Flt Lt Kim Bowditch, OC PSF on 01296 656470.
