Honours and Awards
RAF Halton has honoured several servicemen and women for their contribution to Operations in Afghanistan, Long Service and Good Conduct, contributions to RAF Sport and Commendations by AOC 22 Gp.
Of the six servicemen and women returned from service in Afghanistan, four were awarded their Operational Service Medal with Clasp by the Station Commander at Halton House Officer’s Mess.
Amongst the four was Senior Air Craftswoman Jo Haywood who deployed to Afghanistan earlier this year. Jo said: “I feel very proud to be receiving my medal; it’s nice to have something to recognise the hard work we all put in whilst on Operations. My detachment to Afghanistan was an experience I will never forget. I met some very inspirational people during my time there and as a result of my detachment I learnt that I am able to cope in a very stressful environment.”
Sergeant Nicola Ward, who works as a nurse at RAF Halton, also received the medal. She said: “I enjoyed my time in Afghanistan and it was very rewarding to see both the troops and civilian casualties you had treated on the road to recovery.”
With Remembrance Day around the corner she added: “As Remembrance Day draws closer I find myself thinking back to some of the casualties from my time in Afghanistan. I believe we should keep these thoughts close to our hearts every day, in those quiet moments, and spare a thought for those who are no longer with us.”
