RAF Ladies look to make it 3rd time lucky
The time is upon us again when the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force polish their boots and shine the silverware in preparation for the pinnacle of their seasons – the Inter-Services!!
The RAF Ladies Representative Team (LRT) are looking to put the last two years of disappointment in not retaining the title behind them and look to build on a very promising season of results so far.
The LRT made a positive start to the season with an overseas training camp to Hawaii, where they played some quality teams and had to acclimatise quickly to some (very) warm weather training. Since then they have played several fixtures, with each opposition getting progressively harder in the build up to the Inter-Services.
The weather disrupted some of the fixtures over the winter period but nevertheless the teams’ spirits weren’t dampened as displayed in the latest fixture, which saw the team line up against a physical Prison Service side. It was a quality performance against a decent side, with the LRT winning 2-1, with goals for Cpl Zara Mcintosh (RAF Odiham) and Captain, Cpl Michelle Harvey-Perkins (RAF Halton). Of particular note, there were some impressive performances from some new faces to the team for this season.
The final fixture planned for the Inter-Service build up is against a young Welsh Colleges side, who are hoping to show that youth can overcome experience. This will be the final chance for players to compete for a starting place in the RAF squad for the Inter-Services fixtures.
All the players in the squad and backroom staff have worked hard all season, often having to put extra hours in their primary duty to allow them time away. Everyone involved is excited for the competition and are hoping to banish the last two years of frustration, where the Army have retained the IS title having drawn with the RAF, but beating the Royal Navy by a greater goal difference than the RAF.
RAF vs Welsh Colleges, Wed 6 Mar at RAF Cosford (K.O. at 1400).
