31st Oct RAF Halton 0 – 6 RAF Benson (League)
Nine RAF rugby teams came to Halton for the annual 10’s tournament. A qualifying round was held in a league format knock out competition with pool winners and runners up progressing to a two-tier cup and shield competition. A number of teams had to amalgamate due to stations not being able to field a full ten due to military commitments and so the Bucks Bulldogs, made up of a mixture of Halton and High Wycombe personnel, became Bucks/Wittering. They lost to Cosford 29-12 then to Brize Buccaneers 24-5 but after two strong victories made it to the final of the Shield, losing 28-14 to Benson Bulldogs due to a lack of replacements having played virtually the entire tournament with ten players. The Cup Final was played between Cosford Lions who beat Brize Buccaneers 19-14, making them the winners for the second year running.
At the Combined Services Individual Championships, not only did the RAF win the major competition, with SAC Andy Staley of Honington taking the Men’s open, the RAF squad performed far better than expected by having 3 out of the top 4 players in the Men’s and Ladies competitions, as well as third places in the Veterans and Under-25 Events.
Halton pair Len Brettell and Lee Cobley represented the RAF in the Veterans event and although the Army players were too strong for them, they beat both of the Navy veterans to come a creditable 9th and 10th overall, and were selected in November to play for the RAF team against the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall.
