Wasps & Saracens

RAF Halton has recently hosted Saracens RFC and Wasps RFC youth engagement strategies.

In it’s the fourth year at RAF Halton the Saracens ran a training week of mentoring & training by Matt Davies and Richard Hill MBE (ex-England and British Lions). Training included military leadership and teamwork skills exercises delivered by ten RAF personnel. Matt Davies said: “They have been put into a different environment, fostering different skills, and it has been a very worthwhile week.” Richard Hill MBE, said: “There are some important matches coming up which will decide who goes on to a career in rugby. They have been shown the RAF experience and those that don’t make it on the rugby pitch may well think about a career in the RAF.”

The Wasps again used RAF Halton to for their annual community youth programme for 150 children from across the country and overseas. The children gained valuable skills from coaches and premiership players they aspire to emulate. Russ Bolton, Coach Class Development Officer said: “We look to improve core skills in addition to teaching about nutrition, motivation and hopefully instilling the passion to succeed.” Following training the evenings included military tasks developing leadership, followership, teamwork and communication. Tim Woodley, RAF Wasps Liaison Officer said: “The RAF and the Wasps have a great relationship and as a result the kids here have had the chance to be taught by the best coaches around and given an insight into the RAF.”
