Wendover Juniors Football Tournament

Wendover Juniors Football Club (WJFC) held their annual football tournament at RAF Halton in July.

The tournament achieved its aim of reaching out to all children’s football clubs within a 20 mile radius of RAF Halton making it one of the biggest football tournaments in Buckinghamshire. This saw an amazing 230 teams within the age groups of under 6 to under 15 taking part.

The very high winds and heavy showers didn’t dampen any of the player’s spirits with excellent teamwork and passing skills. Most teams managed to beat the weather conditions to produce some highly entertaining football, delighting the 4,000 spectators that turned out over the two day event.

WJFC Chairman Nick Collier gave a big thank you to the staff and airmen at RAF Halton who assisted in making this year’s tournament yet again the most successful ever hosted. He also thanked the Station Commander, Group Captain Simon Harper, for presenting cups and medals to some of the finalists.

Warrant Officer Chris Eden and Flight Sergeant Mick Cruickshank led the team of 14 Servicemen Awaiting Trade Training (SATT) personnel who made the day such a success. They were delighted to be part of a tournament that saw around 1800 children play over 550 matches in a safe family atmosphere.  Warrant Officer Chris Eden said: “It’s a great sense of achievement when you see so many children enjoying themselves; even in the heavy rain they still had great fun. Better still, we (RAF Halton), have played our part in helping WJFC raise in the region of £8,000. I’m also pleased that WJFC will be contributing £500 to the Station charities fund.
